Product Damage policy of Stores.

A few weeks ago, I visited a grocery store in Omega plaza along Aminu Kano Crescent in the Wuse district of Abuja. This is a store I patronize regularly, In the course of my shopping. I was trying to reach behind some products on the shelf to get a packet of cotton wool balls, when my arm grazed a hand lotion and it dropped to the floor and the cap cracked. The salesgirl who was standing next to me picked it up and took it to the checkout counter. When I asked her why she was doing that, she responded “Madam, you have broken it and you have to pay for it. I checked the price and this 200ml hand lotion was quiet overpriced. I didn’t have enough cash on me to cover the amount, so I asked
her to call the shop owner, so we could resolve this.
The second sales attendant made a halfhearted attempt to call their boss after repeated entreaties, she got back to me that their boss was not picking the calls. She now said she would send her a message via whatsapp. After several minutes, she got back to me and said her boss said I should deposit what I had with me with an undertaking to return later to clear the balance. I then deposited half the price of the hand lotion; I had a feeling I would have been restrained from leaving the shop by the salesgirls, if I didn’t have enough money on me to cover the cost of the product. This was not a very pleasant experience. What do you think should be the policy of stores, when their product is inadvertently damaged by a customer.
